I wouldn't blame Apple for this, BTW it's not Apple's responsibility to make sure that their software is compatible with WD's products. If you are stuck with the incompatible firmware, you can remove the drive from the WD enclosure and put it in another (non-WD) enclosure.
The first thing to do with the drive is to erase (format) it and remove the WD software that is pre-loaded on the drive.

If you have a WD drive, don't install any of the software that comes with it. The best thing to do with a WD drive is not to buy it in the first place. Not sure why anyone would want to do this when there are other options available, like iCloud (which is secure, easy to use, comes with your Mac, and is already engineered to work with your Mac), or Dropbox. So I wouldn't be too eager to use a cloud based solution devised by WD. Every other brand of external HD, all you have to do is format it for a Mac, plug it in, and it works. My advice would be if you use a WD My Cloud as your primary place of data-storage, don't upgrade because using the drive becomes seemingly problematic in El Cap. After many issues with the actual El Cap update (freezing up, crashing, rebooting failures etc) I still find this same issue as before. WD released a firmware update today for My Cloud which I diligently actioned, hoping this would resolve this standing issue, but alas. WD did give some advice on this earlier, but that solution doesn't actually fix the problem, it merely creates a temporary mounted drive for each WD My Cloud folder, that disappears when you reboot - not ideal.
